2011
My eyes were opened today while watching the morning news tojust how weirdsome people are. I was intrigued as to where the local news presenter Alice Bhandhukravi’s name came from. I did a search and one of the first things that came up was the site Current buns - “The female current affairs website”. I was left feeling rather bemused. It appears the site is a hole in which contributors can dump images (manly rather grainy ones it seems) of their favourite female news, sports and weather presenters. Where did this idea spring up? Its been running since 2001. Are they having a 10 year birthday celebration this year?
Another of the top links for any presenter you care to enter in a search will be a facebook fan page. really some people have empty little lives - OR is it just that these folk find pleasure in the simplest of things like a nice smile as a presenter announces that a family died in a house fire last night. I dont know. It then led me to search for some similar sites dedicated to male presenters. Do you know, i didn’t find any. It seems the female portion of society have something better to do than stream, rip, and snatch rough images of the latest young BBC presenter. Empty little lives.
A similarly inspired search for newshounds turned up some similar but unrelated material.

FRANCIS GALTON
I am a month late on this but January 17th marked 100 years since the death of a remarkable man, Francis Galton. He was a relative of Charles Darwin and he brought to this world a whole range of advances and innovations. He was an explorer and a scientist.
His first love was Geography and his weather maps were the first to be published in the Times. The weather symbols he introduced are amongst those that continue to be used today. He invented fingerprinting and pioneered correlation in statistics. This helped him see the grand view of the weather and realise the importance of recording weather pattens over large areas for long periods. His study of the weather over Europe led him to see that stormy weather was followed by the exact opposite, something he and we call anti cyclonic.

WHAT NO MUD? WHERE HAS ALL THE MUD GONE?
Riding to work really puts you in touch with the elements. I mean both the weather and the environment. What is most striking is how the local trails are. I had a few daysearly in january when i arrived at workspeckled in mud. But this soon passed and now even the usually wettest paths through the woods are, maybe not dry but certainly not squidgy. This is a new record - I wrote on 22 feb last year how wet all the trails were. i guess we could get a real downpour over the next week or so, but i dont see it coming.
This winter has been one of the driest on record. Last year was one of the driest in 80 years and this one seems certainly drier still. So with an absence of MuD all we can do is write to it.

STAR COUNT WEEK
This week is officially Star count week. I say officially The campaign for rural Englandwants every one to get involved in counting the amount of stars they can see with the naked eye. It forms part of a study they are conducting into the effects of light pollution. It is being backed by all sorts of people - but it may have passed you by - i only chanced upon the website.Anyone can take part - just take a peak at the orion constellation and count how many stars you can see. You can enter the info in under a minute online.
There is a great audio slide show on light polution and star count week on the Big British Castles website.
